In last days we heard lot of bad news around the world because of the spread of new corona virus. So, we need a break to hear happy news. The UN issued its annual World Happiness Report, which ranks 156 countries around the world. For the third year in a row, Finland was ranked the happiest country in the world. Second and third place maintained by Denmark and Switzerland respectively, while Norway move down to the fifth (5) place in this year.

The report was released by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the United Nations on March 20, the UN’s annual International Day of Happiness.

Countries are ranked on Gallup World Poll and Six (6) factors that support well-being:

  • Levels of GDP
  • Life expectancy
  • Generosity
  • Social support
  • Freedom
  • Corruption income.

When a pandemic like the new corona-virus attacks the world, it seems like a strange time to be evaluating happiness, the editors of the report said that the challenging time can increase the happiness. The new corona virus attacks major factors of a country, especially on income and the health. “a high trust society quite naturally looks for and finds co-operative ways to work together to repair the damage and rebuild better lives,” The reporters explain. “This has led sometimes to surprising increases in happiness in the wake of what might otherwise seem to be unmitigated disasters.”

The editors continued to say, “People are pleasantly surprised by the willingness of their neighbors and their institutions to work in harness to help each other. This delivers a heightened sense of belonging, and pride in what they have been able to achieve by way of mitigation. These gains are sometimes great enough to compensate for the material losses.

According to the report the major economies still are not in a top 10. The United States ranked number 18, The united kingdom stayed in 13th (Up from 15th place 2019), Germany stayed in 17th place as same as last year, Japan came in 62nd place (Down from 58th place), Russia was at 73 (Down from 68th place), China was at 94 (slight down from 93rd place).

On the other hand, report explain the unhappiest countries in the world. Afghanistan has placed at the top of the list as the unhappiest country in the world. South Sudan coming in second, Zimbabwe third and Rwanda got fourth place.
