In the corona virus pandemic most of the people in the world are stuck in a place where they may have to limit their day to day activities, hence it may be stressful for people.

Mental health is the level of psychological well-being. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Mental health is a “state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”. They also state that Mental
health is “fundamental to our collective and individual ability as humans to think, emote, interact with each other, earn a living and enjoy life. On this basis, the promotion, protection and restoration of mental health can be regarded as a vital concern of individuals, communities and societies throughout the world”.

What are the cause of poor mental health

Poor mental health may occur due to a mix of factors such as relationship problems, Addictions, bad work or financial conditions, social isolation and changes, unhealthy lifestyles, genetic factors, biological factors (hormonal changes), Stress, low self-esteem, negative child hood experience, physical ill, learning disabilities and cultural experience.

Treatment for the mental illness

01 – Medicine – uses pharmaceutical drugs

02 – Physical activities – this include doing exercise such as, sport activities, walking, running, cycling, hiking. Physical activities help to increase both mental and physical health.

03 – Psychotherapy – this include different type of psychotherapy. Supportive therapy, transpersonal psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and group therapy.

04 – Meditation programme – Mindfulness meditation help in reducing depression, stress and anxiety. It will increase the emotional wellness and can heal the brain in favorable way.

05 – Complementary therapies – Complementary therapies, recreation and creative art, are also effective ways to heal the mental health of people.


To prevent the poor mental health, we need to make an environment that support and protect civil rights, political rights, socio-economic and cultural rights. Without ensuring social security and freedom it is difficulty to create mental health supportive environment.

Prevention strategies

– Developing mentally healthy homes – It is not only about shelters, it should be positive and safe.
– Invest in local progarmme that aim to improve mental health.
– Conduct mental health education project to the public.
– build social and health care service for olders
– Develop discrimination reduction activities
– Conduct parenting programme – improve parents and their children’s mental health and wellbeing
– Initiate mental health management activities at work – ex- conduct stress management programme
– poverty reduction and ensuring social protection of poor.
– community development project – ex – conduct rural development programme
– Initiate mental health management activities at School – ex – promoting leadership programme
– Initiate social media campaign

In the pandemic like Corona virus, we are more stressful than ever, we hear lot of bad news specially fake news, we have to work on restricted rules, no social contact, have to make self-social isolation, fear on runout of foods and other necessities, income problems, practice of new habit (have to wash hand and clean surfaces regularly) and many more. So we need to keep our mental health in good condition.

During the period, simply we can do followings to protect and improve our mental health.

01- Start home gym

You can do some exercise in your home or garden. If you don’t have garden still you can go up and down your stairs, dance with music, body workout with gym ball.

02- Limit the time you spend with social media and the TV (news)

It is good to have information up to date. but in this time you need to limit the time you spend.

03- Picking up a hobby

It can be fun to find new and interesting ways to enjoy your downtime.

04- Change the daily routine

05- Get some fresh air – If you can’t go outside, open your window and get some fresh air.
